☻ How to enable or disable USB Drives or Ports in Windows 7 | 8 ☻

1. Enable or Disable USB Drives and Mass Storage Devices using Registry
If the administrator is smart then he would definitely do this to ensure a tight blockade. He would alter the settings through regedit command on run console. Now how do you unlock it ? You have to go right into where the administrator has been. Here is how.
  1. Go to Start > Run , type “regedit” and press enter to open the registry editor
  2. Navigate to the following key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\USBSTOR
In the right pane, select Start and change the value to 3. (The value 4 will disable USB Storage). Click OK. This will re-enable USB Ports and allow you to use USB or Pen drives.

2. Disable USB Ports from Device Manager
If you still don’t find your USB drive working, you may have to look into the Device Manager. The Administrator could have possibly disabled the USB port here. Check out for any possibility in the Device Manager and enable the disabled port by right clicking on selected one and click Enable.

3. Uninstall USB Mass Storage Drivers

If the authorities are really worried about security in the school they would take the extreme step of un-installing the USB Mass Storage Drivers. To make things work, just install the device drivers. Here is how you do it.
As when you plug-in your USB drive, Windows will check for drivers, if not found Windows will prompt you to install the driver. This would definitely unlock the Pen drive at your School or office.

4. Use USB Drive Disabler / Enabler

You can download and use a free tool USB Drive Disabler / Enabler which will allow you to easily enable or disable USB drives on your Windows computer.
4

5. Prevent users from connecting USB

If a USB storage device is already installed on your Windows computer, you can edit the Widnows Registry to ensure sure that the USB does not work when anyone connects it to the PC, using thisMicrosoft Fix it 50061. Check first if it applies to your version of the Windows operating system.
Please let us know if you have any questions or observations.

☻Put “God Mode” in easy reach☻

1. Put “God Mode” in easy reach
You wouldn’t know it by looking at the Desktop or Start screen, but Windows 8 practically bristles with settings you can customize. The problem is that they’re scattered throughout Windows 8, and it can be time-consuming to track them down individually.
However, there is one way to find them all in one place: You can use what some people call “God Mode.” While the term “God Mode” has a powerful ring to it, the truth is it’s not a separate mode that you put Windows into. It’s really a hidden folder that gives you fast access to many settings spread out across Windows 8. It’s easy to put that folder right on the Desktop.
First, make sure that you can view hidden files in File Explorer, the system navigation app that in earlier versions of Windows was called Windows Explorer. Run File Explorer, click the View tab, and check the boxes next to “Hidden items” and “File name extensions” in the Ribbon at the top.
Then right-click the Desktop and select New –> Folder. That creates a folder on the Desktop named “New folder.” Rename the folder:

GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}

The folder icon changes, and it has the name GodMode.
(Note that the “GodMode” text isn’t what turns the folder into a special folder; instead, it’s that long string of letters and numbers inside the curly brackets. You can use any text you want before the period just ahead of the opening bracket, and it still points to the same folder and everything works the same.)
Double-click the icon, and you’ll launch a folder filled with dozens of actions, tools and tweaks, from “Change Automatic Maintenance settings” to “View update history.” They’re organized by category. Expand or shrink each category by clicking the small triangle next to it. Each category displays a number next to it, showing how many settings there are in it.
win8tips_godmode_508-100392022-orig
To start any action or tweak, double-click it in the list. In some cases you’ll follow a wizard, in other cases you’ll need to fill in dialog boxes, and in yet other cases you’ll be sent to the Control Panel or another Windows location to do the work.

☻How to solve Folders Showing as Shortcuts, Hidden in USB/Memory-Card/HDD☻

By connecting flash drives to the affected computer, often it shows flash drive containing just some folder’s shortcuts. Sometimes it shows nothing though drive’s properties show it has files in it. Even we get some inaccessible folder or file. This type of problem may also seen in our local drives (HDD partitions). Even paid anti-virus is unable to resolve those folders, they just scan and detect The AUTORUN worm which one will execute all programs. Then our important files remain hidden.

hidden folders shortcuts
Hidden folders and Shortcuts by the Autorun Worm

Here we will see how can we solve this problem by using command line and batch file. Though the batch file is nothing but the executable file contains command lines. So solving the hidden and shortcut problem of USB or drives, we must have the administrator privilege as we will execute something.
Using Command line:
To solve/fix the folder’s hidden or system file, the easiest way is to run a command line. You can apply this command to USB and local drive as well, need to change the drive_letter.
Go to Run, type cmd and hit enter. In command prompt just type:

attrib -h -s -r -a /s /d drive_letter:\*.*

And hit enter. Be sure you’ve typed the drive letter (e.g. j:,h: or D:) instead of “drive_letter” in the command line. My USB drive letter is J: and my command should looks like:

Command to change files attributs
Command for unhide system-hidden files on a drive

All files and folders will be normal and you should be able to delete the shortcuts, created by the virus.

Command line details: Here atrib=attribute, “-“=remove attribute/permits, h=hidden s=system, r=read-only, a=archive, /s=sub directory, /d=directory, drive_letter=the letter of the drive shown in windows explorer (e.g. j:,h: or D:) and *.* is called the wild card for all files.
If you don’t like to be a “command Ninja” then see below.
USB, MicroSD, MiniSD or other Mmory Cards issue:
1. Connect your USB or memory card to the PC or laptop.
2. Copy these lines and paste it into a “new text file”

@echo off
attrib -h -s -r -a /s /d drive_letter:\*.*

3. In the 3rd line give the drive letter name (Example: J or K or L etc.) instead of “drive_name”

4. Save the text file as any_name.bat
5. Double click on the any_name.bat file and it will run in the command prompt and see the hidden files/folders come back.
6. Delete the shortcuts and unnecessary files and folders from USB drive.
Local drive issue:
1. Copy these lines and paste it into a “new text file”

@echo off
attrib -h -s -r -a /s /d D:\*.*
attrib -h -s -r -a /s /d E:\*.*
attrib -h -s -r -a /s /d F:\*.*
attrib -h -s -r -a /s /d G:\*.*
attrib -h -s -r -a /s /d H:\*.*
attrib -h -s -r -a /s /d I:\*.*
attrib -h -s -r -a /s /d J:\*.*
@echo complete.
2. Save the text file as a bat file (example: any_name.bat)
3. Run this bat file by double-clicking on it.
Thus you can solve this kind of problems with a *.bat file. You can save the *.bat file for solving this hidden problem.
Important: These tutorials are applied for Windows 7/Vista/xp. You must have the administrative privilege to run the command or execute the .bat file. Put the ” : ” after the j, k, or D (drive letters). These commands are not case sensitive.

♥Customize USB flash drive [Icon, background & label]♥

Tweaking own USB flash drives in Windows 7/vista/xp by assigning icon, its background and it’s label/name is really a simple trick. Though USB customizer tools are available to download and using those tools one can customize own USB. It is discussed  here. But if we got the tricks to customize our own gadgets then no software or other tools won’t be required.

This post will show how we can customize our USB and make it a different from others one.
The following tutorial is divided into three parts:

  1. Customize USB flash drive’s icon.
  2. Changing USB flash drive’s background image.
  3. Label your flash drive in own or other’s language.
So, lets start the tutorial and give the gadgets a new look. Customize USB flash drive’s icon: One Icon file (.ico or .bmp or .png) is needed to set an icon for USB. You can download lots of icons from Icon Archive,DeviantArt, VistaIcon or find out USB Icon on the web. Your selected icon will be shown when the USB will be connected to a PC.

  1. Get an icon file to the USB. Suppose the icon file name is usb.ico
  2. Create a new text document and write or paste the following lines

    [autorun]
    icon=usb.ico

    23[1]
  3. Save the new text document as autorun.inf in the USB
    33[1]
  4. Place the autorun.inf into the USB. If the autorun.inf is created into the USB then this step is not needed.
  5. Remove your USB safely and plug it again.
    5[1]
Important: *.inf file name must be “autorun.inf” and icon file name must be declared in autorun.infChanging USB flash drive’s background image: Previously I’ve discussed about changing the folder’s background. Now we are going to change USB flash drive’s default (white) background. This trick is also applied to local drives also.

  1. Put an image (*.jpg *.png *.bmp etc.) file into the USB drive. Suppose the image file name is back.jpg
    2.2[3]
  2. Open the notepad and paste these lines.
    for windows xp:
    [{BE098140-A513-11D0-A3A4-00C04FD706EC}]
    iconarea_image=“back.jpg”
    iconarea_text=”0xFFFFFF”

    For windows 7/vista:
    [AveFolder]
    IconArea_Image=back.jpg
    ShadowedText=1
    Recursive=1
  3. Save the text file as desktop.ini into the USB drive.
    2.3[3]
  4. Refresh the window or remove the USB safely and plug it again.
    2.4[3]
Important: Here “ShadowedText=1” and “Recursive=1” are optional. If ShadowedText=1 then all the text of folder or file will give a shadow effect and Recursive=1 means all sub-directories will have the specified background image file. Put “0” instead of “1” if you want to disable this function.
Label your flash drive in own or other’s language: You can add some words as your name or other’s and want to see the words instead of a default USB label. The process will show you how doing that.

  1. Insert the line label=”your-name” into the autorun.inf and follow these sub-steps to complete the task.
    3.1[1]
    Already have an autorun.inf on USB:
    Open the autorun.inf double clicking on it and paste the line (without quotes) “label=your-name” where “your-name” is the name given by you in your own language.
    Create a new autorun.inf file:
    To give a name as USB label, USB must have an autorun.inf file which will contain the label declaration. Open your notepad and type [autorun] and then type label=”your-name” where “your-name” is the name given by you in your own language.
  2. Type your name instead of “your-name” inside the autorun.inf. Here I’ve used my name in Bengali language.
  3. Now save the file by going file option which is on the top left side of the notepad.
    3.4[6]
  4. Select save as and check the file name is autorun.inf
  5. Change the encoding to UNICODE. The Encoding option is located in the lower middle of save as window.
    3.2[6]
  6. Safely remove your USB drive and plug it again. The new given label words are shown as your USB name.
    3.5[11]
The above tips are also applied for MicroSD, MiniSD or any other memory cards when they are connected as a storage device. Now start customizing your USB drive now. Don’t forget to leave a comment.
